Warning for anyone travelling to Spain as popular beaches to close through summer

Anyone travelling to Spain on their holidays soon has been warned that certain beaches may be closed.

Large stretches of beaches in Benalmádena, Costa del Sol, will be shut until from Monday, March 20 until July at the earliest so that vital improvement works can be undertaken.

This will cover popular tourist hotspots Torrebermeja and Las Gaviotas which will be closed to the public during the week but open for visitors on the weekends.

Birmingham Live reports that there's currently not a date set for when they'll be reopening full-time, however the council has said that the nearby beach bars can continue to operate as normal.

The local government team asked the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition to postpone the works until after the summer but they were refused.

From July to December, government officials said they could not start construction work to guarantee the safety of the Patella Ferrugínea, a marine species with a very high level of protection.

The central government is spending 1.1 million euros on extending shore protection that separates the popular Malapesquera and Santa Ana beaches by 80 metres.

Last year a stretch of beach in Benalmádena was forced to close due to a sewage pipe leak.

It comes as Costa del Sol tourism bosses are fighting to get more Brits to visit the sun-drenched area after the coronavirus pandemic hammered their fortunes. For decades the southern Spain coastal resort has been favoured by UK holiday makers looking for some cheap sun, sea and sand.

Meanwhile, it was revealed that UK holidaymakers could be facing travel chaos when going to Spain this Easter thanks to longer-than-usual passport control queues.

Thousands of passengers have recently faced disruption at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport, with bosses warning that the problem may extent to hotspots like the Balearic Islands and Alicante.
