Warning as wildfire breaks out near holiday resort popular with UK tourists

A wildfire has broken out near the popular resort town of Marmaris in Turkey.

According to state media, firefighters are battling to control the fire which started in a forest in southern Turkey. The fire is said to have spread rapidly due to strong winds.

The Anadolu Agency said the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) had assigned 1,393 personnel, to tackle the blaze. 30 homes near the region have been evacuated as a precaution. Agriculture and Forestry Minister Vahit Kirisci said: "It's not a fire that should worry us much, given the current circumstances. But the position we are in right now is of course a bit critical."

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Last summer, thousands of firefighters battled wildfires in resorts on Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Eight people died and many were taken to hospital.

The fires also affected the resort town of Bodrum, a destination popular amongst British holidaymakers. A group of tourists and hotel staff were evacuated by boat as the fire raged near the hotel.
