Warning as laser shone at plane arriving at East Midlands Airport

Police have issued a warning after a green laser was reportedly shone at an aircraft arriving into East Midlands Airport.

The incident was reported to the East Midlands Airport Police on Wednesday evening, June 30.

Officers said the act was "unacceptable" and that offences of this nature can lead to a prison sentence.

Police said in a tweet: "It is an offence to direct or shine a laser so as to dazzle or distract a pilot.

"Causing endangerment to an aircraft can result in a 5 year custodial sentence."

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, there were almost 1,000 laser incidents involving aircraft in the UK in 2017.

Laser attacks are most common near large city airports - and general aviation and emergency helicopter flights are also targeted.

Under the Laser Misuse (Vehicles) Act 2018, offenders can be fined an unlimited amount of money or face a jail sentence of up to five years for endangering an aircraft.
