Walter Smith honoured by Celtic as Tom Boyd joins club chiefs at Ibrox to remember Rangers great

Senior figures at Celtic paid their respects to Walter Smith by laying a wreath at Ibrox on Wednesday.

Chairman Ian Bankier was accompanied by interim chief-executive Michael Nicholson and club legend Tom Boyd in mourning the passing of the Scottish football legend.

Rangers announced the death of their much-loved former manager and chairman aged 73 on Tuesday.

Scottish football has united in grief at the news and a trio from Parkhead were the latest to honour Smith.

Bankier walked alongside Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson before laying a floral tribute outside the stadium.

A note on the wreath read: "Rest in peace Walter... From everyone at Celtic Football Club"

Smith was noted as one of the few who transcended the fierce rivalry and he enjoyed a close friendship with the late, great Tommy Burns.

One of the most iconic figures in Celtic 's history, Burns was assistant manager to Smith when he took over as Scotland manager in 2004.

Smith then helped carry the coffin at Burns' funeral following his tragic death in 2008.
