Wallace festival to celebrate 150th anniversary of Monument

A special festival to mark the 150th anniversary of the National Wallace Monument celebrating Scotland’s national hero will be held later this year.

Musical acts at ‘Wallace Wha Hae’ will include bagpipe band The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and The Voice UK 2015 winner Stevie McCrorie.

It will take place in the grounds of Wallace High School on September 14 and there will also be food and a range of entertainment with a Wallace theme.

A funfair, face painting and a medieval crafts tent will feature plus traditional storytellers, Scotsbard, and medieval re-enactment performance group, The Clann.

Quality food and drink from a selection of Scottish suppliers will be available throughout the day, as well as a fully-licensed bar.

Marketing manager for Stirling District Tourism, the charity that operates the monument, Ken Thomson said: “The building of a national memorial to pay tribute to William Wallace was an important chapter in the story of Stirling.

“From the great public meeting in King’s Park in 1856, and the laying of the foundation stone in 1861, through to the completion and opening of the monument in 1869, Stirling became the focal point for the people of Scotland, where they would recognise the patriot and martyr who had become the country’s national hero.

Mr Thomson added: “And 150 years later the monument has become an internationally-recognised symbol of Wallace’s passion and status, and it is proudly revered by everyone who holds Wallace in high esteem.”

The 150th anniversary programme has been supported by EventScotland, part of VisitScotland’s Events Directorate.

Tickets for Wallace Wha Hae start at £10.50 for adults and £6.50 for children, family and concession tickets are also available.

There is a bonus for the first 500 tickets sold, which will include complimentary admission to the monument on September 14.

All tickets can be purchased from 10am on Friday, May 17 via: nationalwallacemonument.com/wallacewhahae
