Waiting for Boris: How will next UK prime minister handle Trump, Brexit?

It quickly became untenable. The UK government had stood by its ambassador to Washington but less than 24 hours after Donald Trump branded Kim Darroch "wacky" and a "pompous fool", and the latter found himself uninvited to a White House banquet, it was time to throw in the towel. It all started when The Mail on Sunday published leaked diplomatic cables in which Darroch described Trump as "radiating insecurity" and his administration as diplomatically "clumsy and inept".

What does Darroch’s quick demise say about the special relationship and where does it leave Britain's standing on the world stage just as it's divorcing from the EU?

The opposition Labour party is already accusing Boris Johnson of becoming a potential "patsy" to Trump should he win the Conservative Party leadership contest and become the next UK prime minister. We'll ask our panel if it's in the bag for Boris and whether, to meet a Halloween deadline for Brexit, he can last without triggering a snap general election or attempting a shutdown of parliament. We search Tuesday's one and only debate between Johnson and challenger Jeremy Hunt for clues as to which way Britain is headed.
