Turner's gutsy century gives WA hope

Stand-in skipper Ashton Turner has posted a fighting century to help Western Australia overcome a horror start and reach 218 in their one-day clash with Tasmania at the WACA Ground.

The Warriors slumped to 3-16 and 7-81 after winning the toss and electing to bat in Friday's clash at the WACA Ground.

Turner (100 off 121 balls) held firm to ensure WA avoided complete disaster, and AJ Tye joined him late with a swashbuckling 44 off 31 balls, which included five fours and two sixes.

The pair's 59-run partnership gave WA hope of snaring victory, with tail-ender Jason Behrendorff adding a valuable 23 runs at the death before the home side was bowled out in the 48th over.

Tigers paceman Riley Meredith (3-41 off 10 overs) did the early damage, before veteran Peter Siddle (3-31) struck later in the innings, including the key wicket of Turner.

Meredith snared both Sam Whiteman (three) and dangerman Cameron Green (five) LBW to leave WA reeling at 3-16 in the sixth over.

Things went from bad to worse for the Warriors as Shaun Marsh (15), D'Arcy Short (five), Hilton Cartwright (10), and Matthew Kelly (three) all fell cheaply.

Tye's heaves combined with Turner's dogged determination helped spark life into WA's innings.

Turner upped the ante himself later in his innings, but he was out the ball after reaching his ton when Meredith kept his calm to pull off a juggling catch while stepping out and in on the boundary line.

There was some pre-match drama after news filtered through that a snap three-day lockdown had been called for southern Tasmania.

Although the bulk of the Tasmanian squad flew into Perth from South Australia after a Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide, four players flew in directly from Tasmania.

It meant Tasmanian players Tom Andrews, Jake Doran, Riley Meredith, and Mitch Owen had to get clearance from WA Police before Friday's match in Perth could go ahead.

Two match officials also flew in from Tasmania and needed clearance.

No players or officials had visited the exposure sites in Tasmania, and WA Police eventually gave them clearance to feature in Friday's match.

The match was delayed by an hour to give them time to get to the ground and warm up.
