WA Police applaud behaviour of New Year's revellers

People congregated at a large number of sites around Perth, including Yagan Square.

WA Police have thanked the community for celebrating "responsibly" as ten of thousands of people turned out to New Year's Eve hotspots in Perth and around the state.

Police reported no major incidents during the festivities, and only 106 arrests statewide.

Operational Commander Jo McCabe said there was a strong police presence to ensure public order and community safety.

She said while some parties started to get out of hand, they were shut down without incident.

"When we consider the amount of events that were being run statewide, all considered that was fairly good," she said.

"Really for us … it's been like a busy Saturday night, which is fantastic.

"It was very much a family affair, there was people out with children enjoying Perth's celebrations."

About 1,700 officers were on duty around the state, with police responding to 1,300 calls for assistance.

Police figures show there were 106 arrests, 71 summons issued, 213 charges laid and 294 move-on notices issued.

The City of Perth held a family-friendly event with parents bringing children in for 9:00pm fireworks before a larger display at midnight.
