Vulnerable Bristol mum put pillow over her baby's face

A troubled Bristol mum placed a pillow over her baby's face for ten seconds, a court heard.

Bristol Crown Court heard the mum, whose was suffering from a mental health disorder at the time, had felt the child was better off dead if her former partner did not rekindle their relationship.

The 25-year-old, who Bristol Live is not naming to protect the identity of the baby, pleaded guilty to causing cruelty to a child.

Judge Mark Horton handed her a three-year community order combined with a mental health treatment order, ensuring close assistance from health care professionals.

He told the defendant: "Your life has been edited by tragedy."

Judge Horton told the court the mum had been subjected to considerable physical and psychological abuse of an appalling, demeaning nature, involving relationships which amounted to "caring with violence".

The judge said the mum had abused cannabis and ecstasy in the past but there was no suggestion she had done so at the time of the offence or since.

The court heard at the time of the offence she was caring for her child without the support of family or friends, was sleep deprived and isolating due to the pandemic.

A psychiatrist diagnosed her as having an unstable personality disorder, with feelings of rejection and abandonment.

She was also suffering from post-natal depression.

Thankfully the child, aged three months at the time, was not said to have been harmed in any way, the court was told.

The judge concluded the mum's psychological issues caused the offence, she was impaired at the time and had not made a rational choice.

Having been remanded in custody, the woman was told she would be released after signing her agreement to abide by the mental health treatment order. - progress on which should be made to the court.

The judge told her: "I wish you a lot of luck."
