Voice of the People: Boris Johnson peddling lies is the only guarantee PM can offer

Boris Johnson is a liar. Peddling lies is the only guarantee this charlatan Prime Minister can offer.

A man of low morals, a political huckster with personal grandeur as his driving ambition, he has no vision beyond “get Brexit done”.

Even on that, he is hoping the public will fall for his con trick.

Nobody should be deceived. Johnson’s vow to wrap up a trade deal with the EU by the end of next year is not achievable, as every serious politician knows.

Johnson believes there is no penalty for lying or breaking the rules. He promised never to suspend Parliament, then did. He promised not to extend Brexit talks, then did.

He has promised to end austerity. But he won’t.

His election spending promises do not amount to a row of beans compared with the task ahead.

It was Johnson who, in government, championed policies which saw the slowest economic growth in history accompanied by the biggest ever growth in rough sleeping, the normalisation of food banks and the worst NHS crisis since it was founded.

Now the Tories have been caught trying to sell our NHS in a toxic deal with Donald Trump.

After ten years of Tory rule every part of the national fabric has been shredded – the health service, education, housing, public transport, social care, policing.

Crime is up, as is inequality and – most shaming of all – child poverty is at record levels.

Now he’d like us to believe that he privately argued that it was “not the right way forward”.

Pull the other one Mr Johnson.

The Liberal Democrats, as partners in the coalition government, were complicit in a regime that laid waste to the country. No election apology from Jo Swinson can dispel the prospect of them doing it all over again.

Labour’s policies offer an alternative to despair, division and dysfunction.

From child care to dignity in old age, fairness in energy prices, a functioning rail network, repaired health service, opportunity for all and a people’s vote on Brexit, Labour will meet voters’ needs.

On Thursday the nation has the chance to vote for hope, for a once-in-a generation chance to put the country back on track.

Get it wrong on the 12th and Britain will receive a very unwelcome Christmas present.
