Voice of the Mirror: 'Joe Biden is to blame for tragedy in Afghanistan'

Britain's involvement in Afghanistan has ended tragically.

Two British nationals and the child of another were among the 95 victims of the bomb attack at Kabul airport on Thursday.

They join the thousands who have died during the two-decade long mission to try to restore order and stability to the country.

It is no reflection on the valour and dedication of our armed forces that our time in Afghanistan has ended in failure.

The responsibility for this calamity rests primarily with US president Joe Biden.

He may have inherited the plans from Donald Trump but he was under no obligation to stick to the hasty withdrawal date in the face of the rapid resurgence of the Taliban.

America has let down the Afghan people, the NATO forces who sacrificed so much and her closest allies.

The cost will be paid by innocent Afghans who face a terrifying future. The international community must not desert them.

Splashing out

Rishi Sunak had the good fortune to marry an Indian billionaire’s daughter.

Money is no object for the super-wealthy Chancellor. To prove the point he has been granted permission to add a swimming pool and gym to his £1.5million Yorkshire house.

It is up to Mr Sunak how he wishes to splash his cash but you wonder if someone who never has to worry about money understands what it is like for those who do.

His lifestyle is a world away from families who face being thrown below the poverty line next month due to his Universal Credit cuts.

While he is able to call in the builders, many families will fear a visit from the bailiffs because of his policies.

Legend’s back

Cristiano Ronaldo’s nifty moves are not just confined to the pitch. He has yet again blindsided the opposition by making a surprise return to his former club Manchester United.
