The Public Health Ministry is closely monitoring Covid-19 transmission in 10 provinces where new infections have yet to decline, while new infections have dropped below 10,000 per day across the country.
Dr Apisamai Srirungson, assistant spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said the ministry is keeping an eye on Khon Kaen, Rayong, Chiang Mai, Tak, Chanthaburi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, as well as Songkhla, Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat.
While the daily cases are on a downward trend and new cases in greater Bangkok are falling, infections in these 10 provinces are actually increasing on some days, she said.
She said infections in the border provinces of Tak and Chanthaburi are still comparatively low compared to the eight other provinces, but there are fears of a possible uptick due to illegal border crossings.
"Surveillance in these provinces must be stepped up because their Covid-19 situation is very different to other provinces," she said.
According to the CCSA, there were 8,165 new Covid-19 cases and 55 deaths recorded in the 24 hours prior to the release of figures on Monday. Of the total, 7,640 cases were reported in the general population and 525 among prison inmates.
The number of new cases fell from the 8,859 announced on Sunday, when the country reported 47 more deaths.
Bangkok saw a significant drop with 625 new cases, followed by 539 in Nakhon Si Thammarat, 476 in Songkhla, 448 in Pattani, 378 in Chiang Mai, 351 in Narathiwat, 295 in Trang, 290 in Yala, 259 in Chon Buri and 249 in Samut Prakan.
