Virgin Atlantic has announced plans to cut 3,150 jobs at the airline

Virgin Atlantic has announced plans cut thousands of jobs.

They have said that  3,150 jobs at the airline will be going.

It comes with the industry struggling against Covid-19 social distancing measures, which have seen only a handful of flights leave Birmingham Airport.

The airline and holiday operation, established by Richard Branson's Virgin empire, employs 10,000 UK staff.

Flights from Gatwick - closed due to the collapse in demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic - will not restart. Some routes will be switched to Heathrow.

Chief executive Shai Weiss said the carrier must take steps to "reduce our costs, preserve cash and to protect as many jobs as possible".

The airline said talks with the Government about obtaining additional funding during the coronavirus lockdown "are ongoing".

Founder Sir Richard Branson recently warned the carrier will collapse unless it receives Government support.

This comes after it emerged British Airways had begun consulting on up to 12,000 redundancies, while rival Ryanair has said it plans to axe 3,000 jobs
