Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez step up Liverpool recovery alongside Fabinho

Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk continued their Liverpool rehabilitation at the AXA Training Centre on Friday.

Van Dijk returned to Merseyside earlier this month after spending much of the last two months out in Dubai working on his rehab at the Nad al Sheba complex.

Gomez, who suffered a serious knee injury while on England duty in November, has been using the facilities at Kirkby for the last few weeks as he continues his own steps towards a Liverpool return.

Both centre-backs were involved in the gym on Friday as Liverpool's staff put them through their paces with weight sessions and strength and conditioning work.

Fabinho was also pictured as he worked on his fitness following a muscle problem that has sidelined him since the defeat to Man City.

Liverpool are still unable to place a time frame on when either Gomez or Van Dijk will be able to take to the field again, but both are making good progress in their efforts.

Van Dijk underwent surgery at the end of October after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage following a reckless Jordan Pickford challenge in the 2-2 draw with Everton on October 17.

His work with a personal trainer in Dubai saw him return to the pitch with a football and he flew back to Liverpool a couple of weeks ago to step up his rehab at the AXA Centre.

Gomez's own surgery came a lot quicker than Van Dijk's after suffering the injury in a training session with England on November 11.

The Three Lions international was quickly booked in to go under the knife and was understood to have avoided ligament damage.

Neither player is believed to be close to returning to the Liverpool squad but the news will come as a welcome boost for Jurgen Klopp, who has been forced to deal with centre-back problems all season.

So far this season, Klopp has been forced to name as many as 13 different centre-back pairings, while Joel Matip's season was confirmed as being over at the end of January.
