Violent storms leave 111 people dead and trail of destruction in India

  • An unseasonal violent storm, featuring heavy rain, hail, and lightning, struck the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.
  • The storm resulted in the deaths of at least 111 people and injured over 50, with many fatalities caused by falling trees and collapsing building walls.
  • Five districts were severely affected, experiencing widespread damage to homes, crops, and power infrastructure, as well as disruption to mobile networks.
  • State authorities deployed emergency teams and Chief Minister Adityanath ordered immediate relief work and compensation for the victims and damaged property.
  • International condolences were extended by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the UAE foreign ministry, and Singapore's High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong.
