Violent Scots rapist who abused and controlled ex-partners jailed for seven years

A Scots rapist who was found guilty of raping and abusing four women has been jailed for more than seven years. Sales advisor Rian Hood, 31, from Kilmarnock, raped one woman, sexually assaulted two others and subjected all of his victims to violent attacks.

A jury heard that Hood degraded and controlled his partners, tracking their movements and blocking their contact with friends and family. He was found guilty of ten charges against women, all carried out during the course of relationships.

At the High Court in Glasgow today, he was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison, and a three year extended sentence during which he will be closely supervised.

His name was added to the sex offenders register and he was also given Non Harassment Orders covering all four victims for an indefinite period.

Fraser Gibson, Scotland’s national procurator fiscal for High Court Sexual Offences, said: "Rian Hood is a habitual domestic abuser.

Hood was found guilty of 10 charges, including rape, abduction and assault to danger to life, of abuse on four women (UGC)

"Women who became involved with him quickly found themselves subjected to appalling sexual and physical violence, until they lost all confidence in themselves.

“I would commend them for their courage in speaking out. It is their bravery which has allowed our expert prosecutors to bring this man to justice.

“Any victim of similar offending should be assured that the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service will use all tools available to prosecute abusers. I would urge victims to come forward, report the crime and seek help.”

Two of Hood's victims' previously told the Record they want to see tougher sentences for men who terrorise their partners.

Jade Doolan said how after suffering a severe beating by Hood at their Ayrshire home, including jamming his fingers down her throat to gag her, she called 999 for help and was also arrested by police.

The 27-year-old told how during their 18-month relationship he banned her from contacting family members, tracked her location using her phone 24/7 and sexually assaulted her.

She also said Hood has a cocaine and gambling addiction, which turned him from a caring, affectionate boyfriend into a violent control freak.

Jade, who is receiving counselling for her ordeal, said when they met in the summer of 2018, Hood appeared to be the "perfect man." But things unravelled quickly when she discovered he'd been convicted of embezzling a former employer.

She said: "I found out over the summer that he had lost his job because he had committed embezzlement, a fact he tried to hide from me. He was funding a cocaine and gambling addiction.

"He was either at work, on the drink or on his PC playing games or gambling, if he lost, he would flip off, start smashing the sofa or throwing remotes, he broke his PC screen because he lost a bet. He had a volatile temper.

"He got a new job and was out of the house a lot, as was I because I also worked full time. He would start to make me feel like I was worthless regularly, accusing me of cheating on him and demanding my location be on always when we were not together."

She said the first time he attacked her in September 2018 he threw her out of their house in her underwear and made her sit outside in the cold.

Jade explained: "He was in my face screaming at me, there was an ironing board next to me and he picked it up and slammed it into the wall. I was crying by this point; I had never seen him this angry.

"He started screaming at me calling me stupid for crying saying, 'look at the f****g state of you, you stupid c*w, you caused this'.

"I was hysterical, he grabbed me and dragged me out of the house in my bra and threw my jumper after me and slammed the door closed. He locked me out in this state."

She added: "After this I was on eggshells. I regularly googled 'am I being abused' because I knew something was wrong, but I wasn’t beaten within an inch of my life like women in the TV adverts. His jealousy continued after this.

"He would log into my social media on the way to work and check who I was talking to. Made me block people he didn’t like the look of. Another time the dog was sick and he said it was my fault and pinned me to the wall by the throat."

Jade said when she called 999 after a particularly violent episode she ended up spending a night in the cells too as the Hood told police she started the fight and had a mental illness."

She said Hood regularly mentally abused her and told her she had imagined him assaulting her. Jade eventually fled to a women's refuge after the vicious Hood beat her savagely on Christmas Eve.

She added: "Every day I go over the whole thing telling myself what I could have done to make myself safe, I am tortured everyday by what he did but I'm pleased he's been found guilty and I hope the courts punish him harshly for the women he has harmed.

"When I heard he'd cried like a baby as he was taken away I wasn't surprised. I always knew he would react like that. It's called justice.
