Vikings GM Rick Spielman is confident in coach Mike Zimmer

It’s no secret the 2018 season was a huge disappointment for a Vikings team that finished 8-7-1, missing out on the playoffs after advancing to the NFC championship game the season prior.

Vikings GM Rick Spielman took a chance by signing Kirk Cousins. Who was to blame for the team’s struggles? The defense? Offensive line? Cousins? There’s really no exact answer.

But Spielman has confidence in this team, led by coach Mike Zimmer.

“We have to have a better season,” Spielman said via the Star Tribune. “We have good players here, and I know the coaching staff is outstanding and I know Coach [Mike Zimmer] will lead us in the right direction.”

Zimmer, 62, has been the team’s head coach since 2014 and has amassed a 47-32-1 record, advancing to the playoffs twice in five seasons.

His contract, along with Spielman’s, runs through the 2020 season.

There’s a lot of pressure in Minnesota in 2019 to perform and make the playoffs. Jobs are likely on the line. The talent on the field certainly seems like enough. It’s up to Zimmer and his coaching staff to maximize that.
