Viking Sky cruise ship starts evacuating 1,300 passengers and crew due to engine problems

More than 1,000 passengers on board a cruise ship are being evacuated after it started to experience engine problems.

The 1,300 passengers and crew are being evacuated from the Viking Sky cruise ship in Norway.

The ship started to have engine problems and sent a mayday call from the west of Norway.

Norwegian newspaper VG said the ship ran into propulsion problems due to strong winds on Saturday.

Norwegian officials say rescue workers have managed to evacuate about 100 people so far.

Police in the county of Moere og Romsdal said the ship has managed to moor in Hustadsvika Bay, between the western Norwegian cities of Alesund and Trondheim.

Rescue teams with helicopters and boats have been sent to help and evacuate the cruise ship in a process which is expected to take several hours.
