Chicago police officers, supporters and community members unite Monday in West Englewood for a vigil and balloon release to honor slain Chicago Police Officer Ella French. | Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times

A vigil Monday evening in the West Englewood community where Chicago Police Officer Ella French, 29, was killed Saturday night, brought out about 200 people — fellow officers along with community members and supporters — who prayed and released balloons in her honor.

The officer was fatally shot while conducting a traffic stop Saturday night in an incident that also left her Chicago Police Department Community Safety Team partner hospitalized Monday night.
