Viewers react to RTE commentary chaos in Ireland's Rugby World Cup clash with Scotland

Viewers were left confused and frustrated by RTE's coverage of Ireland's opening Rugby World Cup clash with Scotland.

Joe Schmidt's men got their campaign off to the perfect start with a resounding 27-3 win - but RTE were left scrambling due to the barely audible commentary at the start of the match.

Hugh Cahill and Donal Lenihan were broadcasting live from the stadium in Yokohama, Japan, but technical issues meant fans back home were struggling to hear them.

After several minutes RTE chose to instead use UK television commentary while the issue was investigated, before Cahill and Lenihan later returned.

However when the Irish commentary link was eventually restored it was out of sync with the action on the field, leaving viewers even more frustrated.

And the chaos provoked a big reaction on social media as fans voiced their annoyance with the sound issues.

One viewer said the commentary sounded like it was coming "from a coke can outside the stadium", while another said it was "amateur hour".

Paddy Power joked on Twitter that Cahill and Lenihan were broadcasting "via walkie-talkie", while another fan said the pair were "commentating from a cockpit".

RTE have been contacted by the Irish Mirror for comment on the incident.
