Video shows Dublin GAA legend Jason Sherlock lifted into New York St Patrick's Day parade by gardaí

There were plenty of star attractions in the New York St Patrick's Day parade but none caused a stir quite as big as a man behind the barrier viewing the festivities.

Dubin GAA icon Jason Sherlock was in New York for the parade and was front and centre as the parade made its way down 5th Avenue.

A huge contingent of gardaí were marching in the parade but while they moved down the street in their finery, they couldn't help but break from the formalities to meet a true GAA hero.

A number of gardaí stopped to chat Jayo - and even take a photo- but one group got so excited they hoisted him over the barrier so he could join their march in the parade.

They held him aloft like the Sam Maguire Cup and chanted 'Jayo' as they continued down part the thousands of spectators in attendance.

A number of bemused American onlookers asked those at the parade with Sherlock what was going on.

One man said: "I've been coming to the parade for years and I've never seen anything like that. That was awesome."

They explained that Sherlock was a Gaelic football star at home having won an All-Ireland with the Dublin footballers in the 1990s and becoming one of the sport's most recognisable players even long after retirement.

An Garda Síochana shared the clip on Twitter on Friday evening and said: "Our members are never off duty! An Garda Síochána’s contingent that travelled to NYC to proudly take part in today’s parade scoped out well known @officialgaa star, @boomjayo in the crowd. He’s now been taken in for questioning on his crimes against football!"

Jason Sherlock later replied: "I’m an innocent man! Thank you to your members for welcoming me to the force!"
