Victorian government refers allegations of MP's inappropriate conduct to Speaker

The Victorian government has asked the Speaker to investigate reports an MP used their parliamentary office for sex.

On Saturday, the Herald Sun reported a backbench Labor MP was being investigated over concerns he had used his parliamentary office for sex.

There is no suggestion the MP was engaged in criminal behaviour or that the sex was non-consensual.

When asked about the reports, the Victorian government said the Premier's office had raised concerns about the MP's conduct with the Speaker of the Parliament.

"This kind of behaviour is completely inappropriate and falls well short of community standards," a government spokesperson said.

"The conduct of Members of Parliament is a matter for the Presiding Officers."

The Speaker, Colin Brooks, is currently leading a cross-party process to develop a new framework on MP conduct and include new and independent avenues for complaints to be made.

At the moment, ministerial staff with concerns can raise formal or informal complaints with their manager or chief of staff.

The spokesperson said staff were encouraged to come forward if they had wished to make a complaint, which would be treated seriously and acted on.
