Victoria has recorded another 6,694 new COVID-19 infections as hospitalisations rise to 215.

It takes the total number of active coronavirus infections to 49,921. No new COVID-related deaths were recorded on Saturday.

Of those in hospital, 21 are in intensive care and six are on a ventilator.

Health authorities say the tally of new cases comprises 4,483 positive rapid antigen test results and 2,211 from PCR swabs.

Winter, BA.2 sub-variant complicate quarantine relaxation

Premier Daniel Andrews said there was no update on when the national expert health panel, the AHPPC, would make a decision on how each jurisdiction could best manage scrapping quarantine periods.

Two weeks ago, National Cabinet asked the AHPPC to provide urgent advice about how states could end quarantine for close contacts.

If the AHPPC agrees to the plan, people who have mild symptoms would be asked to voluntarily self-isolate.

Mr Andrews said he'd had multiple discussions with NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet about what the changes would be for case numbers.

"Logic tells you it will drive [up] the number of cases. It's about balance: How many extra cases can we have before it influences the number of people who end up in hospital," Mr Andrews said.

"We're very keen to move down this path but we need to do it with a proper understanding [of cases]."

On Friday, Australia's Chief Health Officer indicated the process would be finalised in the coming weeks.

Mr Andrews said the coming winter months — coupled with the new highly infectious BA.2 sub-variant — had to be "weighed up".

"We're very keen to try and have the smallest number of rules, the least intrusive … we can possibly have but at the same time, we have to be focused on keeping people safe," he said.
