Victoria records nine further COVID-related deaths and 4,867 cases, 358 people in hospital

Victoria has recorded nine further COVID-related deaths.

The number of people in hospital after contracting the virus now sits at 358, down from the 365 announced yesterday.

Of those patients, 51 are intensive care units and 12 are receiving ventilation.

The 358 people in hospital after contracting COVID-19 is the lowest figure since there were 323 patients on December 13.

But the number of people receiving intensive care is much lower — there were 116 people in ICUs on December 13, compared to 51 today.

More than 1,000 people have died after contracting the virus in the intervening two months.

The state recorded another 4,867 new COVID-19 cases yesterday.

That total is made up of 1,726 positive PCR tests and 3,141 rapid antigen test results.

It is the lowest daily tally since December 29, when 3,767 new cases were reported.

The end of 2021 was marked by immense pressure on Victoria's testing system, and it was believed there were many more cases undetected in the community at the time.

It brings the number of officially reported active infections to 46,703, down from 48,420 recorded on Saturday.

Density limits on hospitality venues and check-in requirements loosened again this weekend in light of falling case numbers and rising vaccination rates.

About 55 per cent of Victorians aged 18 and above have had a third dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Victorians aged 18 and over will be able to access the Novavax dose from Monday.

The protein-based vaccine joins AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna in use in Australia.

It will be available at selected state-run hubs, as well as GPs and pharmacies.
