Victoria Centre flats resident says sorry after calling security staff 'slaves'

A Victoria Centre flats resident has apologised for calling security staff "slaves" in a squabble as he tried to reach his flat.

"I said wrong and I am sorry," Lyes Ramla told city magistrates. He admitted threatening behaviour on May 15.

He was given a six-month conditional discharge and must pay a £20 government surcharge. Because he currently has no income, he was given three months to pay.

Sanjay Jerath, prosecuting, said that Ramla, 46, came up with the abuse after being asked to calm down.

"The security people were simply doing their jobs. People nearby were very distressed," Mr Jerath told the court.

Jo Tait, mitigating, said that Ramla has health problems and that security staff were provocative. They tried to stop him getting into the flats complex, although they knew he lives there.

"They didn't cover themselves with glory and neither did he. He takes responsibility for his own behaviour," said Miss Tait.

She added: "His reaction was completely over the top but he is from Albania and has seen all sorts of horrors. He sought asylum and has been granted it.

"He suffers from post traumatic stress disorder. This was Ramadan and he was fasting and his medication could not be taken on an empty stomach.
