Vicky Phelan pens poignant tribute following death of Lynsey Bennett and shares health update

Vicky Phelan has shared a poignant tribute in memory of fellow Cervical Check activist Lynsey Bennett, who died yesterday at the age of 34.

Brave mum-of-two Lynsey was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and endured three years of chemotherapy. She passed away at her home in Longford on Thursday.

She leaves a legacy of fighting for greater care for women in Ireland. Last year she settled a High Court action over the alleged misreading of her cervical smear slides which missed her diagnosis.

Tributes have been rolling in for the much-loved mum-of-two, including from fellow activist Vicky Phelan, who is battling terminal cancer. The pair became the voices for the women affected by the failures to notify those who have flawed test results.

In an emotional post on Instagram, 48-year-old mum-of-two Vicky admitted she was late posting a tribute as she is “not very well” and “spent most of the day out at the hospital".

“I am very late posting a tribute to @lynseybennettofficial here today because I am not well myself and spent most of the day out at the hospital having a procedure done.

“That, unfortunately, is the reality of living with late stage cervical cancer as Lynsey would have known only too well these last few months of her very short life, at only 34 years of age,” Vicky wrote on Instagram.

She went on to sympathise with Lynsey's family and friends.

Vicky continued: “I am thinking today of Lynsey's two beautiful girls, Zoe and Hailee, who are so very young to have their mother taken away from them. I would also like to sympathise with Lynsey's family and friends. I am so very sorry for your loss.

“Lynsey had an amazing will to live which no doubt kept her alive for as long as she did beyond the 6 month prognosis that she was given. Her daughters were able to get some extra precious time to spend with their Mam and make some more memories that they will treasure. May you Rest in Peace Lynsey.”
