- Vickrum Digwa, who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of university student Henry Nowak , is seeking to appeal against both his conviction and sentence, as confirmed by the Court of Appeal.
- Digwa received a minimum 21-year jail term last month for fatally stabbing 18-year-old Mr Nowak in Southampton on 3 December last year.
- Separately, the Solicitor General, Ellie Reeves, referred Digwa's sentence to the Court of Appeal in June, arguing it was “unduly lenient”.
- The case sparked protests after police body-worn footage showed officers handcuffing Mr Nowak as he lay dying and failing to provide first aid, despite his pleas that he could not breathe.
- The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating two officers for potential gross misconduct, including failures to recognise Mr Nowak's urgent medical needs, dismissing his claim of being stabbed, and the decision to arrest him instead of administering first aid, with the watchdog also examining if race or religion influenced their actions.
