Vic Pubs To Stay Open All Night Long For Socceroos Vs Egypt, So We Checked Each State’s Game Day Law

Australia’s Socceroos will face off against Egypt at 4am (AEST) on Saturday in a knockout game that has World Cup fandom hitting a fever pitch. Rather than fans storming Fed Square or, God forbid, watching from home, state governments are updating venue laws, allowing pubs to stay open overnight so Socceroo fans can have a bevy while they wait for their team to take the pitch.

These will differ from state to state, so be sure to double-check yours before you end up in your green and gold face paint at a closed bar with a broken heart.

Vic & NSW

Well boy, they’ve made it easy for you guys!

Venues in Victoria and New South Wales that are broadcasting the game will automatically be allowed to stay open, with Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announcing the drinks could keep flowing until an hour after the game ends.

“Good luck Socceroos – Victoria is behind you,” she said.

In NSW, venues showing the game can be open from 3am, plus those which were meant to close at 1 or 2am can just stay open all night. Slumber party!

They’ve even got extra train services running to help travellers commute to see the game, ‘cos God forbid there’s a delay on our way to the bandwagon.

Queensland

Approved venues — that are open to show the game — will be allowed to serve from 3am to 7am on Saturday.

The Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation will be approving venues, though applications closed today, so we hope your local got theirs in on time.

Celebrating the decision earlier this week, Queensland’s Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said, “There’s nothing like coming together with a crowd to cheer on the Socceroos, and we want Queenslanders to be part of that atmosphere”.

Everywhere else

Ahh, we don’t mean to lump you guys but there haven’t been big sweeping changes in your states and territories, we’re afraid. That’s not to say that places won’t be showing the game though!

In WA, SA, Tassie, ACT & the NT, venues can apply for extended hours. Of course, you lucky ducks in WA will be watching at 2am not 4, so it’s not the end of the world, hey?
