Vermont, Servator and Sceptre: How police operations get their distinctive names

Police operations all have distinctive names, setting them apart from one another.

For example, on Wednesday (May 24), police made a number of drug-related arrests in Walton under Operation Vermont. This operation has been focussed on targeting serious and organised crime.

Merseyside Police also took part in Operation Sceptre, which was a week-long (May 15 May 21) national campaign to target those carrying weapons, prevent knife related offences, raise awareness of the dangers of knife crime, and provide young people with more positive alternatives to crime.

Officers were positioned on The Strand and Wapping on May 1 as part of the police's Project Servator, which has been running since 2018. The project "aims to disrupt a range of criminal activity, including terrorism, while providing a reassuring presence for the public".

These distinctive names all come from an approved list. Then the officer in charge can request a specific name.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the ECHO: "They are chosen from an approved list which are separated into categories such as countries, animals etc which is managed centrally.

"Whoever is responsible for the operation requests the name."
