Vera new series announcement has fans beside themselves with excitement

Vera fans have reacted with delight at news of the popular crime drama's new series.

After many North East locals have spotted the cast and crew of the hit ITV show filming at various locations over the past year, on Thursday the broadcaster finally confirmed when the first new episodes will air.

Like many other programmes, production on series 11 was massively disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, with filming significantly delayed due to lockdown restrictions.

This has resulted in ITV making the decision to show just two feature length episodes this year, with the rest following next year.

And it has now been revealed that the first of these will air on ITV on Sunday, August 29.

As was teased earlier this year, Vera's 11th series opens when the body of well-respected local builder, Jim Tullman, is found beaten to death on the steps of Tynemouth's Collingwood Monument.

DCI Vera Stanhope, of course played by BAFTA winning actress and Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn, questions how such a seemingly beloved and imposing figure could be attacked so viciously.

Fans were left massively excited by the news that Vera will be back on our screens so soon, with one tweeting leading lady Brenda to say: "so excited that a new series of Vera will be back on our screens on Sunday. Your acting and character Vera are outstanding. Hope all the usual actors will be with you, an amazing team. Well done to you all managing to film during covid."

Equally excited, another wrote: "In the midst of all this gloom a ray of light. A new series of Vera will be coming to our TVs very soon," and a third reacted: "I’m so looking forward to the new series of Vera! Can’t wait! Brilliant show love it. Always fantastic performances by the lovely @BrendaBlethyn and the fab @kennydoughty "

As well as Tynemouth, which is the scene of episode one's grisly murder, other filming locations for the new series of Vera include Amble, Chester-le-Street, Jesmond, Wallsend and Old Hartley.
