Venus Williams claims first US Open doubles win in 11 years

  • Venus Williams secured her first Grand Slam victory in four years, winning her opening women's doubles match at the US Open.
  • Partnering with Canadian Leylah Fernandez, Williams defeated the sixth seeds Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez with a score of 7-6 (4) 6-3.
  • Williams expressed gratitude to Fernandez, saying she was the “best partner I’ve ever played with outside of Serena”.
  • It was Williams’ first US Open doubles win since 2014.
  • In singles, second seed Iga Swiatek overcame a second-round challenge, defeating Suzan Lamens 6-1 4-6 6-4.
