Vehicle towing 'rockets' turns out to be peaceful climate change protest

There was a 'bomb scare' in North Bristol this morning which turned out to be a peaceful climate protest. Police were called at around 8.40am to reports of a vehicle towing 'rockets' in the Stoke Gifford area.

Officers eventually tracked down the vehicle at an address in Kingsdown at 10am. They spoke to an individual who explained that the 'rockets' were props, and no offences were identified.

A spokesperson from Avon and Somerset Police said: "Police had a reported sighting in the Stoke Gifford area of a vehicle towing what was described as 'rockets' on a trailer.

"The call came in just before 8.40am on Wednesday 19 October. Officers attended but found no trace of the vehicle.

"Subsequent enquiries led them to an address in Kingsdown, Bristol, where they spoke to an individual at about 10am and confirmed the 'rockets' were props and part of a peaceful protest by the driver. No offences were identified."

The protest was being carried out by a group from Kingsdown who are concerned with the contribution of the arms industry on the climate crisis. A sign on the 'rocket trailer' reads: "Wind & Green Industry: Yes. Missiles & Bombs: No."

A spokesperson from the group told Bristol Live: “North Bristol houses one of Europe’s larges aerospace and military engineering sectors. We want this high technology, industrial hub to turn around to produce energy saving technology and possibly carbon capturing installations”

“It is estimated that all military activities contribute over eight per cent of the world global CO2 emissions."
