NASHIK: The price of vegetables during the last one month in retail markets of the city has gone up between 20% and 60% due to diminishing supply coupled with rise in fuel prices.
The price of leafy vegetables like fenugreek and coriander leaves has increased by around 60%, while for okra, chilli, cucumber, and other vegetables the rise is around 20%. Vikas Mogle, a vegetable vendor, said, “The supply of vegetables had gone down due to summer. To add to this, the transport cost for the vegetables has also increased.”
He added, “Earlier, we used to spend around Rs 150 per trip on transport of vegetables from Nashik APMC in the city to the vegetable market at Raviwar Karanja. Now, the transport cost has increased to Rs 200 per trip,”
Suresh Malode, another vendor, repeated that there has been a huge drop in supply of vegetables, leading to price hike in retail markets.
According to an official from Nashik APMC, owing to summer the supply of vegetables has reduced by around 35% which has led to rise in vegetable prices.
Arunk Kale, secretary of the Nashik APMC, said there has been a drastic drop in supply of green and leafy vegetables. “This has also led to a rise in average price of vegetables by 20%. The supply will continue to remain short till May-end and will increase from June onwards,” he said.
