All You Really Need To Know About UCF (23-8)
(American Athletic), NCAA NET Rank: 30. East 9-seed
Try to blow off the 79-55 clunker to Memphis in the AAC Tournament – this is an outstanding team as long as the score is kept in the 60s. There aren’t a whole lot of resumé wins, but UCF’s NCAA NET Rank is terrific, it’s loaded with upperclassmen, and led by 7-6 Tacko Fall, there’s plenty of size.
The offense is great from close range because of the inside presence, and the blocked shots and rebounding are strong, but there aren’t a lot of threes. Again, this isn’t a team that wants to get up and down the floor and get the scoring rolling.
All You Really Need To Know About VCU (25-7)
(Atlantic 10), NCAA NET Rank: 34. East 8-seed
The regular season Atlantic 10 champs won 12 straight before getting knocked out of the conference tournament by Rhode Island. There aren’t a slew of great wins on the slate, but the NCAA NET Rank is strong, there are plenty of veterans, and the depth is there to outlast just about anyone.
The Rams are fantastic defensively with a whole lot of steals and an attacking style that gives everyone fits. They block shots, they turn takeaways into points, and they’re amazing at guarding the three. However, they stink from three and they commit a whole lot of fouls.
What’s Going To Happen
Get ready for a rough day for offenses. Neither team puts up points in bunches, both defenses are amazing, and both are awful from three. But VCU is better at forcing mistakes and turning up the pressure than UCF is, but VCU also gives the ball away more. It’ll be a close, tight game with the Knights being far worse on the free throw line late.
