Vardy v Rooney under fire as 'whole of Liverpool' cringe over 'unconvincing' accent

Vardy v Rooney viewers 'switched off' moments into the first episode.

The highly anticipated Channel 4 programme arrived on our screens tonight. The show is a factual drama based on the real life courtroom "Wagatha Christie" case.

Rebekah Vardy failed in her attempts to sue Coleen for defamation after she accused Jamie Vardy's wife of leaking false stories of her private life to the press. The internet exploded on October 9, 2019 when Coleen accused Mrs Vardy's Instagram account of selling stories about her.

Coleen conducted a month's long sting operation to catch the person out who she believed was selling stories about her to The S*n. After blocking "everybody but one person" from viewing her Instagram stories, the mum-of-four concluded the source could only be the account of M rs Vardy.

The first episode of tonight's drama started with a reading of the bombshell tweet. Coleen is played in the show by Chanel Cresswell and some viewers took to Twitter and said they were unimpressed with the Derbyshire-born actress' Scouse accent.

Matty said: "Vardy v Rooney Lasted 3 seconds hearing that awful attempt at a Scouse accent…."

Tessa said: "not convinced by the casting so far but this is gonna be hilarious regardless"

Jimmy added: "Whoever cast #VardyVRooney needs sacking! As for Michael Sheen taking a role I can only imagine he’s had a quiet year?"

Thea posted: "Seriously who thought she could do a scouse accent. The whole of Liverpool has second hand embarrassment right now"

Kez tweeted: "Why is it so hard to hire Scouse actors to play Scousers? Rare you can find someone who can do a successful accent"

Michelle said: "That attempt at the Scouse accent is awful"

Gabrielle commented: "Don’t know if I can sit through the awful attempt at a scouse accent"

However, other viewers were impressed by the show as they heaped praise on the programme.

Aaron said: "This is going to be great!"

Sean added: "Really good so far. Michael Sheen well watchable"

@dgtwatter posted : "Vardy v Rooney is excellent!"
