Vance Joseph returns to Broncos as defensive coordinator

The Denver Broncos have a new defensive coordinator.

Sean Payton is adding Vance Joseph to his staff to run Denver’s defense, according to a report from Peter Schrager of Fox Sports. Joseph, 50, is returning to the team five years after he was fired from his head coach position in 2018.

Joseph went 11-21 as a head coach with the Broncos from 2017-2018. He was fired by the team’s previous management which included former president/CEO Joe Ellis and ex-general manager John Elway. Denver is now under new ownership with a new GM in George Paton.

The new ownership group hired Payton earlier this month and he’s now bringing in Joseph to replace Ejiro Evero, who left the franchise to join the Carolina Panthers in a lateral move. Evero was close friends with former Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett and he declined the opportunity to serve as interim coach after Hackett was fired with two games remaining last season.

Payton will now run the team’s offense with Joseph managing the defense. Before returning to Denver, Joseph served as the Arizona Cardinals’ defensive coordinator from 2019-2022. During that time, Arizona’s defense ranked 28th, 12th, 11th and 31st in points allowed.
