Van Runs over up to 10 People in Toronto, Driver Arrested

Up to 10 people were wounded when a van rammed into pedestrians in Toronto, police said. (Reuters)

Up to ten people were injured in the Canadian city of Toronto on Monday after a van ran into a number of pedestrians, police said.

The driver has since been arrested. Police gave no details on age, gender or possible motive

Police said on Twitter that it was "too early to confirm the number of pedestrians struck or their injuries."

Officers were called to the scene at 1:27 pm (1727 GMT), Canadian police said, without specifying whether or not the incident was deliberate.

Police spokeswoman Meaghan Gray said the van apparently jumped the curb, but the reason is not yet known.

According to local media, at least four people were killed in the incident and the vehicle had fled the scene.

The incident occurred Monday as cabinet ministers from the G7 countries were gathered in Toronto to discuss a range of international issues in the run-up to the G7 meeting near Quebec City in June.
