Vaccine rollout 'has saved 100k lives in England'

More than 100k lives have been saved by the vaccine rollout, according to Public Health England.

In the fastest vaccine rollout in history, more than 75 million jabs have now been administered.

Last week, it was announced 75% of adults had received both jabs, with 95% of the adult population carrying antibodies against Covid.

The success of the vaccine rollout is now believed to have prevented 100k deaths across England.

The number of hospitalisations estimated to have been prevented by the rollout currently stands at 82,100.

Professor Sir Keith Willett, head of the Covid-19 vaccination programme in England, said: “It is remarkable that more than one hundred thousand lives have been saved thanks to the tireless efforts of NHS staff and volunteers,

“(NHS staff) have been doing all they can to reach their communities vaccinating them at parks and festivals, in places of worship and sports venues across the country.”

Health Secretary Sajid Javid has also praised the success of the vaccine programme, and in particular the impact it has had on the ability to reopen a number of industries across the country last month.

Mr Javid said: “The vaccines have made a life-changing difference to so many of us and continue to help us build a stronger wall of defence every day,”

The Health Secretary added the new data was “phenomenal” and that it was a “testament to the UK’s vaccination programme”

In Liverpool, 310,560 people have received at least one vaccination, with 266,300 people now having received both jabs.

Sir Willett has urged everyone yet to receive their jabs to do so as quick as possible. The head of the vaccine programme said: “The vaccine is safe and effective and remains the best way to protect yourself, your friends and your family and so if you haven’t already I would encourage you to make that lifesaving appointment today.”
