Uttarakhand: 2 men drown in Roorkee canal, 3 others rescued

ROORKEE: Two Roorkee residents drowned in Gangnahar canal while swimming on Monday.

The two men had gone to the canal with three of their friends and they had ventured into deep waters. Police have recovered the body of the victims identified as Rupesh from Shahpur village and Sagar from Mahadi Sikanderpur village. According to police, a group of five friends, all in their early twenties, had come from different villages of Bhagwanpur sub-division to Roorkee on Monday afternoon on their motorbikes. They went for a swim in the Gangnahar canal at Solani Park.

Passersby noticed them trying to venture into dangerous stretches of the canal, which have strong currents, and raised an alarm. Subsequently, a team of jal police rushed to the spot. While they were able to save three of them, two men drowned.

"We have sent bodies of the victims for postmortem in civil hospital," said sub-inspector Sanjay Singh Negi. So far, more than 12 dozen people have drowned in the Gangnagar canal this year.
