Uttar Pradesh: Unable to meet Delhi University cutoff, Sitapur girl ends her life

LUCKNOW: A 17-year-old girl from Sitapur, who secured 81% marks in class 12 UP Board examinations, ended her life by jumping into the river Sharda as her marks were not enough to get her a seat in Delhi University.

Garima Verma was devastated after the declaration of Board results on Sunday as she was eyeing a berth in DU and was expecting enough marks to make the cut. She plunged to her death on Sunday and her body was recovered from the Sharda river in Barabanki on Tuesday morning.

It was identified by her father Girish Kumar Verma.

Police found a suicide note in her belongings where she stated that she was not happy with her Board results.

"Her father said Garima wanted admission in DU but her marks were not enough for it," said SHO, Mehmoodabad, Vijayendra Yadav. Garima remained depressed after her results came out and did not talk to anyone, her parents told the police. The final average cutoff for admission to a majority of courses in DU last year was approximately 95%-96%.

A police team reached the spot and found Garima Verma’s identity card and a suicide note. "Sorry mummy, sorry papa, Mujhe pata hai ye galat hai, per mai kya karun, meri kuch samajh main nahi aa raha hai. Main is result ke saath ji nahi paungi (Sorry mummy, sorry papa. I know this is wrong but I don’t know what to do. I cannot live with such result)," the suicide note read.

Local villagers told the police they had seen a girl jumping into the river.

Police also said that the note had been sent to handwriting experts, while her parents have confirmed it to be written by Garima.

"We will also take statements from her friends and teachers," added the SHO.
