VARANASI: Muscleman politician and Samajwadi Party MLA Ramakant Yadav on Monday was sent to jail after he surrendered before the MP-MLA court of Azamgarh in two cases lodged against him in 1998 and 2016.

Ramakant's lawyer Adya Shankar Dubey said, "The SP MLA surrendered before the MP-MLA court in a case lodged in 1998 on the charges of attempt to murder and disturbing public order by blocking road and one more case lodged in 2016. The court ordered to send him to the Azamgarh district jail under judicial custody."

Regarding the case lodged in 1998, Dubey said, "In 1998 parliamentary election, Ramakant had contested as SP candidate while Akbar Ahmed Dumpy was Bahujan Samaj Party candidate. In some electoral dispute, Dumpy had reached Ambari police outpost with his over 40 supporters and challenged Ramakant to prove his supremacy. Within a few minutes Ramakant and his supporters also reached there and an exchange of fire took place between the two groups."

"Nobody suffered injuries in this exchange of fire besides no empty shell had been recovered from the spot," said Dubey.

Ramakant also surrendered in another case lodged against him

Dubey added, “Five persons including Ramakant were arrested from the spot in this connection after lodging of a case of attempt to murder, rioting and disturbing public orders in 1998.” “Later, Ramakant got the proceeding stayed in this case from Allahabad High Court. The period of the proceeding stay ended on Monday after which he surrendered before the court,” he added.

Dubey said that Ramakant also surrendered in another case lodged against him for disturbing public order by blocking road in 2016 when he and former MLA Shyam Bahadur Yadav had come face to face with their supporters. After remaining a member of the legislative assembly between 1985 and 1995, Ramakant had become MP for the first time on BSP ticket in 1996. The four-time MP kept shifting his loyalty to SP, BJP and Congress.

Following poor show on Congress ticket from Bhadohi seat in 2019 LS poll, he returned to SP. He was also made an accused in February 2021 Ahiraula hooch tragedy in which 10 people had died. Dumpy had reached Lok Sabha after winning 1998 general election and 2008 byelection.
