Uttar Pradesh: Nine persons drown on Ganga Dussehra

KANPUR: Ten persons drowned while taking bath in the Ganga on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra, on Thursday. Police said the identity of four bodies is yet to be ascertained.

Amit Yadav alias Baba (18), a resident of Mohalla Jatwara Jadeed in Farrukhabad, and his friend Govind Yadav (17) of Dariba Paschim of the district, had gone to take a bath in the Ganga at Panchal Ghat. When they did not return home till afternoon, their family members launched a search. They found their bicycles parked at the Panchal Ghat and informed the police.

A search was conducted after which their bodies were fished out by local divers. Police said while searching for Govind and Amit, four more bodies were found in the Ganga. SP Ashok Kumar Meena said, "We are trying to identify the four bodies recovered from Panchal Ghat."

In a separate incident, Rahul Kumar (25), his uncle Vinod and Anil (22), residents of Hamirpur village of Mainpuri, had gone to take a bath in the Ganga. Suddenly, Rahul and Anil started drowning.

Divers searched for Anil and saved him but failed to trace Rahul. About an hour later, divers pulled out Rahul's body.
