He will now remain in custody till April 16. ATS said the remand has been extended to verify claims of Murtaza’s father Munir regarding ragging and humiliation of his son at IIT-Bombay, and his chain of financial transactions.
Murtaza, whose week-long remand ended on Monday, was presented before the additional chief judicial magistrate (ACJM). UP Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Shahpur police had urged the court to extend his remand.
“ATS and Shahpur police jointly appealed to court to extend the police remand of Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi saying his custody is required for probe. The ACJM court extended the remand for five more days, till April 16,” said senior lawyer PK Dubey.
After presenting Abbasi in court, ATS took him to police lines and later returned to Lucknow with him after collecting a copy of the court order.
The ATS teams also visited Abbasi’s residence in the presence of his uncle Dr Khaled Abbasi and collected some other documents.
Sources in ATS also said that the accused is likely to be taken to some other districts for physical verification of evidence.
Psychological test reports of Abbasi are awaited, while the forensic department is yet to give details of his laptop and mobile phone.
“Some data has been retrieved from the phone and laptop but we are tracking other exhibits,” said an ATS official.
The ATS is also mulling to send a team to Mumbai for verification of statements about his life in IIT Bombay and his job period in Jamnagar.
