Uttar Pradesh bans crackers in NCR, cities with poor air quality

LUCKNOW: The UP government on Friday banned sale and use of firecrackers on Diwali and other upcoming festivals this year in the National Capital Region (NCR) and other cities in the state, where ambient air quality is poor.

And for cities with ‘moderate’ air quality, firecrackers would be restricted, the state home department stated. Green crackers, however, can be used, but not for more than two hours.

During Christmas and New Year, green crackers can be used between 11:55pm and 12:30am, only where air quality is ‘moderate’ or lower.

As for use of firecrackers for reasons other than specified festivals, prior permission of the district magistrate of the area will be required and it will be allowed for a limited period if permission is granted, based on the air quality.
