Utah mother who wrote book on grief sentenced for husband’s murder

  • Kouri Richins, a Utah mother, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the aggravated murder of her husband, Eric Richins.
  • Richins was convicted of poisoning Eric with a lethal dose of fentanyl in a Moscow Mule cocktail in 2022, on what would have been his 44th birthday.
  • Prosecutors said Richins was deeply in debt and sought to collect on multiple life insurance policies she had taken out on her husband without his knowledge, falsely believing she would inherit more than $4 million.
  • The case garnered significant attention, as Richins had published a children's book about grief after her husband's death, before her arrest for his murder.
  • Her three sons, aged 9, 7, and 5 at the time of their father's death, expressed fear for their safety if their mother were ever released from prison, according to a memo filed by prosecutors.
