Utah mother sentenced to life for husband’s murder begs sons for forgiveness

  • Kouri Richins, a children's grief book author from Utah, was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole for the 2022 fentanyl poisoning murder of her husband, Eric Richins.
  • During her sentencing, Richins spoke publicly for the first time, addressing her three sons, maintaining her innocence and pleading for their forgiveness while insisting she never abandoned them.
  • Prosecutors argued Richins poisoned her husband with a lethal dose of fentanyl and previously attempted to do so, motivated by significant debt, multiple life insurance policies, and a desire to inherit over $4 million.
  • Richins used her statement to offer her sons advice on love, marriage and resilience, acknowledging imperfections in her marriage to Eric and urging them not to hold hate.
  • Victim impact statements from her children, read by therapists, detailed their fear and discomfort with her behavior, including being put in the basement and the oldest being locked in his room when she was drunk.
