US President-elect Joe Biden mentions Irish border as he declares 'America is back'

US President-elect Joe Biden has said that the Irish border must stay open after Brexit.

Speaking in Delaware, Donald Trump's successor said he had spoken to Taoiseach Micheal Martin about the importance of an open border.

Biden told RTE News: "We have worked too hard to get Ireland worked out.

"I've talked with the British Prime Minister, I've talked with the Taoiseach, I've talked with others, such as the French.

Joe Biden: I'm telling world leaders that America is back

"The idea of having the border north and south once again being closed, it's just not right, we have got to keep the border open."

The President-elect was announcing nominees for the top national security and foreign policy roles.

Mr Biden also declared that "America is back" during his speech in his hometown.

This all comes after news that the President will reportedly make Ireland his first state visit when in office.

Business Insider report that the politician with strong Irish roots is planning the trip to the Emerald Isle.

Reports suggest the trip would also signal Ireland becoming a more important ally to the US as the UK faces Brexit.

77-year-old Biden is proud of his Irish roots and has frequently discussed them in the run up to his campaign.
