US President-elect Joe Biden has received the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine

US President-elect Joe Biden has received the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine live on television in an effort to boost Americans' confidence in the vaccine.

The 78-year-old received the jab at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware.

Speaking during the visit, Biden told Americans "there's nothing to worry about" when they get vaccinated and that in the meantime they should keep wearing masks and "listen to the experts".

"I’m doing this to demonstrate that people should be prepared when it’s available to take the vaccine. There’s nothing to worry about," he said.

Mr Biden's wife, Jill, also received the vaccine.

After the jab, Biden thanked scientists and medical workers, saying their efforts were “just amazing”.

During his speech, Biden urged Americans to wear masks during the upcoming Christmas holiday and to avoid travelling unless it's absolutely necessary.

He also praised the current White House administration, saying: “I think that the administration deserves some credit getting this off the ground” and that the vaccine provides “great hope”.

The Bidens are just the latest high-profile political figures to receive the first dose of vaccinations.

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife were vaccinated last week while Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic House speaker, and Mitch McConnell, Republican Senate majority leader, also received doses on Friday

In the US, COVID-19 has killed at least 317,684 people and infected nearly 17.9 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
