US police identify 'person of interest' in New York subway shooting after at least 20 people injured

US police officers have identified a man of interest following a rush-hour shooting in a New York subway station on Tuesday.

The attacker set off smoke bombs and shot at numerous innocent commuters in Brooklyn, injuring around 20 people.

In the aftermath of the incident, police confirmed that ten bystanders were hit directly by gunfire, and five needed hospital treatment for critical injuries.

It is understood that everyone who was affected is in a stable condition, and officers told an evening news conference that they are all expected to survive.

Due to the smoke bombs and terrified crowds fleeing the scene, 17 people suffered respiratory distress among other injuries.

Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of a suspect is being offered a reward of $50,000, according to the team of investigators.

At this point, they believe the criminal acted alone and are focusing their search around a U-Haul van which was found hours after the attack on a Brooklyn street.

A "person of interest" was identified by police and named as Frank James. He is believed to have rented the vehicle in Philadelphia before it was abandoned nearby the scene.

Police recovered the key to the van at the subway station, and say that Mr James has addresses in Philadelphia and Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner, Keechant Sewell, told reporters late last night that the shooting was not being treated as an act of terrorism yet.
