What happened on day 3 of the US Open? Gauff edges through

It was another absorbing day at Flushing Meadows as a number of the top seeds entered the court for the final matches of the first round.

Jannik Sinner, Alex de Minaur and Iga Swiatek in particular cruised through their games, winning in straight sets over their opponents.

But, the most engrossing game of the day came in the evening session when Coco Gauff faced off against Ajla Tomljanović.

The top U.S. seed took the opening set 6-4 before being defeated in a tiebreak in the second. That set up the all-important decider, where Gauff showed that champion’s mentality as she came through to win it 7-5.

Having been heavily criticized for her recent performances — particularly her serve — the 21-year-old admitted that it had been "mentally exhausting" (see below) trying to improve that area of her game.

Coco Gauff (3) vs Ajla Tomljanović highlights

Jacob Fearnley overcomes heckler

One of the more interesting moments from last night was Jacob Fearnley's match against Roberto Bautista Agut, where the Brit picked up his maiden US Open victory.

He had to not just overcome his opponent, but a heckler as well who initially appeared to be supporting the 24-year-old before switching halfway through the first set.

Nevertheless, Fearnley overcame the Spaniard 3-1.

Carlos Alcaraz in action today!

Carlos Alcaraz is back for his second round match today and will continue to sport his new haircut, which drew a lot of attention on Monday.

He will be facing off against Mattia Bellucci, who is looking to progress into the third round of the US Open for the first time in his career — not an easy task against the world number 2.

Emma Raducanu vs Janice Tjen - 11 A.M. ET / 4 P.M. BST

For British fans, the eye-catching game of the day has to be Emma Raducanu vs Janice Tjen.

The 22-year-old won her first match at the tournament since her 2021 triumph, defeating Ena Shibahara in straight sets in the first round.

Fans from Blighty can watch the game on Sky Sports or Australian residents can tune in on 9Now for free.
